Hi Miki, I don't know if this will work but why not try to scan a pic of the fabric and cut out one of the pics from the scan, place it on your work and see if it is the size you want?

Wha-a-a-a-a! I went to the quilt shop on Friday...I could only find a fat quarter of my floral to finish the border. I did get some of the black circle print, and I still have the tourquoise to dark blue. Now I need some help trying to figure out how to make the fat quarter "stretch" to work in the border. I do have a little of the floral left over from cutting the first square also. IDEAS, PLEASE!?!?!?

Jami-

Sounds like this is one of those times where "design opportunity" comes into play. Okay, so you got lemons (not enough fabric), let's see if we can help you make lemonade. Put on your thinking caps ladies, we need to think outside the box.

How about cutting strips from your different fabrics as wide as you would need for binding. You could cut them all the same length, but by cutting varying lengths, you could cut to better advantage since you have limited fabric available. Stitch them end to end until you have a strip long enough for binding. You know, you wouldn't even need to do all four sides with the same treatment. If you had, say enough of the black to do two sides adjacent sides and did the other two  with pieced strip binding, it would give your quilt an unexpected element of whimsey.

Can you tell I am from the generation that learned "use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without" at my mother's knee? LOL It doesn't help that I have that Scot-Irish mentality, either! Frugel was my grandmother's mantra! LOL

Jami if it were mine, I think I would use the floral to make an L shaped continuous border around the bottom left corner of your quilt. That way you get the impact from a large piece of that focus fabric.  Then piece the other fabrics around the rest of the left side, part of the top, the rest of the bottom, and part of the right side. Then I would do another continuous border of the dark circle fabric to finish off the upper right corner.

The black floral is what I only have a fat quarter of. The pictures of my little quilt are on page 4.
That is kind of what I was thinking, but how do you do the "L" shape border? I like how Jess's looks, but how do you measure to even cut it? I'm so-o-o-o confused!

Jami -

Sorry I did not respond before!! Hmmm... well, I will have to think on this and see if I can put it into words. I really just layed my pieces out by the center convergence and cut them where I wanted them... Wait, I think I sketched it out first. I will have to look for that stuff tomorrow and let you know. I still don't have the border sewn on, but I will give it another go soon.

More to come.... you can thank me for being no help at all later.... grin.

Well, It took me a LONG time to finally figure out what I wanted to do here...I took advantage of "lots of minds" at a quilt retreat this past week. Even then, it really just gave me the courage to just cut into the fabrics I had left and finish the little top.

I like how it finished out, and my plan is to alternate the bindings so on the black circle print I have the floral for binding and using the black circle print on the large floral print. We'll see how that goes!!

Jami

That is really so pretty - well done for finishing, sometimes you just need that extra time before deciding don't you.
