I really don't have a clue how many UFO's I have. I'm not sure I want to actually know the count! I think the part that bugs me the most is all the totes of projects in various stages of completion. How 'bout all of you?? Are you game to join in and finish up some of those projects?? This is the place I'm going to come and list my "OMG, I've got another one done!!" I'm not counting the quilting part of it, but just getting the tops together. I will get backing fabrics as the budget allows and get them hung up and placed in line for their turn on the long arm. Jami PS- so far, I have completed the piecing of the March 2009 Mystery. I've posted a picture there, so I won't repeat it here. 1 down...I don't know how many to go!!

Expert Posts: 2136 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Winter Garden, FL | Go, Jami! I started really concentrating on my UFOs late last year. In addition to projects already started, I keep collecting kits or patterns and fabric that go into the box, too! I've been trying to finish the started ones. And one I just finally threw away...it had been in the box for a couple of years and I remembered I didn't like it when it went in there. I was right...still didn't like it! So I cut off the fabric I could salvage and threw the rest of it in the trash! Anyway, I think I have about 4 projects underway, and probably a dozen more that are patiently waiting. Of course, I've already signed up for 3 classes in Feb, which will be 3 more unfinished projects! ACK!

Elite Veteran Posts: 634 ![]() ![]() ![]() | OMG Jami Question: How hard is it to learn to use a long arm quilting machine with nothing but the instructions that come with it? I ask because I keep kicking around the idea of buying one but I guess I'm just being a chicken. I thought I would experment on small things with my regular one first! And ask around about what kind to buy, who has good luck with which kind, that kinda thing! So anybody have any input I'd like to hear it! And as for that unspeakable question you asked, I'll get back to you on that!

Elite Veteran Posts: 663 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Winnipeg, Canada | I have listed UFOs almost as long as I have quilted. For me it is a good keep-me-in-line list. In 2000 my goal was to work up scraps so they didn't accumulate so badly. I'm still whittling on that goal. Other than that I cleared up all UFOs in 2008. I might have one that is a hangover from 2008, the rest are all 2009 starts. That's about 12 to 15 on the list. I have found I am really also much more selective about saving instructions just because. However, the cross stitch is a slightly different matter. I have actually already cleared two off the list as I decided they weren't going to happen anyway much as the thought appealed at the time. My UFOs include tops to quilt.

Veteran Posts: 266 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Scotland | It's refreshing to find out I am not alone in having a LOT of UFO's. I would not know where to start, do I count just quilt projects, or do I include all the smaller patchwork things I have on the go, and then what about cross-stitch? my second rag rug waiting to be walked on? The sampler for my grandson's birth,(24/11/08) Some have been started quite recently, my oldest UFO is a cross stitch sampler I started for my hubby. He is an accountant and the sampler is to have a money related word starting with each word of the alphabet, it is not finished because of the letter 'X' - any ideas anyone?? I sometimes ask myself why do I keep on buying kits? I think it is I'm afraid if I don't get it now I won't see it again, same with material. Here's another question, How big is your stash???? Veteran Posts: 266 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Scotland | Hi Gerda, Thankyou, I do like that idea and I have thought of putting something before the 'X'. The only problem is that this is my own design, the very first cross stitch I designed for myself, (I started it in 1985!) and all the letters run from top to bottom in a straight row, in black with the words in red, so you see, if I put a letter before the letter (if you follow me) it will be out of sinc. In other words, I did not think it through! It also has symbols representing all the different types of businesses Mark has worked with over the years. My only other option is to find a foreign word that would fit. My son has suggested something Greek. I told Mark what you suggested, he said it sounded about right Sue

And I see what you mean about out of sync - I didn't think of that - it would look odd if it was the only one. Wow, that's almost as old as my oldest cross stitch UFO! I started a long narrow one of loons on a lake (loons are a common water bird here in Canada, and Bill LOVES them! and the sound they make. I really should pull it out and start again - it's mostly blacks on a blue Aida cloth. Hmmmm......LOL Gerda

Veteran Posts: 107 ![]() | I'm with Sherry, any recommendations on a longarm, I have 10 tops at the quilters right now, Oh my poor budget! Been kicking around buying a long arm for a while, I don't want to quilt for others, but would like to quilt my own quilts and charity tops. I don't really start a project and then not finish it, I know I am anal about that, but I have to finish what I start, even if I don't like it. I do keep all projects that are ready to go in it's own box that way I have everything in one place, I bought a lot of 12" square plastic storage boxes at JoAnn's , I have found this is the best way for me to keep organized, otherwise I spend 95% of my time looking for things. But, what I really have a problem with,is books and patterns, how does everyone store them? Susie

Elite Veteran Posts: 678 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'm in the same boat! I have way to many to count right now, but I did the "big clean" on my room and have almost finished putting my UFOs in their own bins (the Art Bins from JoAnns or the pretty boxes they have there). I am making a list on my white board and will go from there.... Now, cross stitch, knitting and crocheting and scrapbooking/cardmaking are a whole different story As far as magazines, I bought some of those magazine holders from an office supply store. they are plain jane, but I am hoping to cover them with either scrapbook paper or fabric scraps - yet another project to add to my list. But I am with you Jami, this is the year of the UFO!! (for quilts anyway)

Extreme Veteran Posts: 545 ![]() ![]() Location: PNW | Why did you have to ask? i have made lists for the past few years and still made no headway. So I won't even try this year. i'm embarrased to say how many Ufo's I have. I do keep them in baskets on my shelves until the shelves are full, new set of shelves now put together. I use the very thick detergent boxes to make magazine holders. I cut down one end and angle up the front and back to the top of the other end. I had planned to cover them with contact paper, never seems to happen, but they do their job. I also started making copies of a pattern from a book or mag to include with the ufo's so as not to tie up the whole book of patterns with one 'kit'.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1109 ![]() ![]() Location: Hagersville, Ontario, Canada | Okay ladies promise not to laugh - Last year Sept 2008 - Sept 2009 we did a FOR GET ME KNOT challenge(aka UFO) the new name sounds so much better. We came up with a scoring system - with points. Then we figured every possible stage a project could be at. - allotted points and those that wished played. The was room for up to 20 projects. About 15 did it. They presented the finished works at show & tell at our mtgs. There were prizes for the most points, most projects, etc. It was fun and alot of projects got life , so to speak. We also did a swap projects thing as well. Food for thought. lol Hugs and stitches Debbieann - who has at least 20 UFO's
