We all have them, you know you do! That ugly bit of fabric that makes you wonder, “What in the world was I thinking when I bought that?” or perhaps, “Why did they send me this FQ in that swap last year, probably they could not find anything to do with it either!” It is time to dig out that ugly, unwanted, poor orphaned scrap of fabric and make it into something delightful.

The Challenge – Find an ugly scrap of fabric (about a FQ worth, 22” by 18”) in your stash. Post a photo of your ugly fabric to the Ugly FQ Challenge thread on The Quilt and Needle Forum. Then, make something fun, lovely, or useful from that Ugly bit of fabric. Your final product can be something as small as a coaster, or something as large as a bed quilt, but the Ugly FQ has to be a noticeable part of the end product. You can use any other fabrics and materials with the Ugly FQ to create your final submission. Post your final product photo on the Ugly FQ Challenge thread on The Quilt and Needle Forum.

Judging Criteria – The submissions will be judged both on ugliness of the original scrap of fabric and worthiness of the final product. Basically, it is a judgment of “Most Improved” bit of fabric. The first place winner will receive a FQ surprise from The Quilt and Needle and a 20% coupon for their next purchase. The runner up with receive a FQ surprise from The Quilt and Needle and a 10% off coupon for their next purchase.

Deadlines – The deadline for submission of your original Ugly FQ photo is January 31, 2008. Final product photos are due on April 30, 2008. Winners will be announced on May 2, 2008.

Count me in too

Only trouble is I really have to get back into this sewing lark again as have not been able to sew probably for such a long time and I have so many outstanding swaps etc to get finished - anyway, less talk and more sewing!

I'm hoping to join this Challenge.  Going in a few minutes to dig through my stash for something really, truly UGLY!!!  If I find something appropriate I'll post to tell you know for sure that I'm joining.  I just know, with as much fabric as I have, there has to be something totally horrendous in there!

Not sure where I'm supposed to post the picture of my hideously ugly FQ, so will try to post it here.  If this isn't the right place for it, maybe someone will be so kind as to move it for me - or tell me where to put it.  Now I'm warning you - this piece of fabric is atrocious, so if someone gets violently ill looking at it, don't say I didn't warn you!!!  The sad thing is, I actually BOUGHT this FQ!  What on earth was I thinking??!!  Or maybe I WASN'T thinking!!!!

I found the perfect pattern to use this UGLY THING in - and guess what, I've even started cutting out the pieces!!!

Can see that there is no point in me doing this challenge- I think Nola's fabric is quite nice. It looks like a piece of burled wood to me, nicely finished and rich with patina. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess.

Actually, I think I bought that fabric for some Autumn project I was doing - needed a lot of "earthy" looking fabrics for leaves, trees, etc.  And mixed in with that type of fabric, this piece doesn't look bad.  But just by itself, it's not exactly high on the "pretty" list.  But it's going to work beautifully with this quilt pattern I found!!!  Just need to cut out a few more pieces and I'll be ready to start sewing on it.  But will have to put it aside until I get the rest of the costumes for the church Christmas program finished.

Your right Meg, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think that's why these Ugly quilts work, because even if one person thinks it's ugly, another doesn't :

Nola - that's a very useful fabric if you're doing a landscape or forest theme - it reminds me of moss on trees or under trees :)

Connie - I've got some of the corn kernel fabric and I think it's great

Now I have to find something really gross and take part in this challenge :)

ok i've got a FQ that i got from the BC Bingo last spring/summer and while i don't think it is ugly, it is NOT something i would've bought on purpose nor on a whim - would not have even given it a 2nd glance at even a 90%-off sale table - just not  my style - so does that count for this?  just wondering before i put too much thought into what to do with it . . .

and nola, i agree with the others, your FQ looks nice - kinda has a "metallic" feel to it, of course we are just looking at a photo of it . . .
