National Tie One on Day™ - Let's Make Aprons!
Saturday Special - October 18, 2008

According to the Apron Memories website, "National Tie One On Day™ celebrates the humble apron and the spirit of women of earlier generations who donned the universal symbol of home, family and mothering as the uniform of their daily wardrobe and helped make America the great country it is today. On the day before Thanksgiving, EllynAnne encourages us to pause in the preparation of our own meal, wrap a loaf of bread in an apron, tuck a prayer or note of encouragement in the pocket, and tie one on...an apron, of course!, and deliver the wrapped bundle to someone in need of spiritual or physical sustenance. According to EllynAnne, no matter which way you turn out of your own front door, someone who is deserving of a hug is very close by. 'Women clad in aprons have traditionally prepared the Thanksgiving meal,' says EllynAnne, 'and it is within our historical linkage to share our bounty.'"

For our upcoming Saturday Special on October 18, we are going to get together on the Forum/Discussion Board and make Aprons for the event. Your apron can go to any woman you know that is "in need of spiritual or physical sustenance" or you can send them to The Quilt and Needle and we will donate them to the local women's shelter. I will personally make the loaves of bread for The Quilt and Needle delivery.

If you order fabric from our store for this project, type Apron into the coupon code box and you will receive 5% off your entire order. That is right! Order fabric for a single Apron to make during our Saturday Special, and you will receive our special discount for anything else your order that day!!
Join us on October 18 as we make aprons for this worthy cause, and donate your apron this National Tie One On Day™.

There are plenty of free apron patterns available online, and we need links to the good ones!! Do you have a favorite apron pattern online, or one that you would like to try? Post a link to this thread, someone else might like to try that pattern too! I did a google search earlier, and there were SO many!!

I've made aprons before as gifts for others but, would you believe that I don't have one for me to use. I may just try to make a couple so I can keep one! Great project idea Jess.

Now I just have to find a pattern and some fabric....

What a great idea. I love aprons and use them all the time. I have some of my grandmothers & nanna's old aprons. I think I would just use one of those as a pattern. Sounds like fun.

I've just ordered the Joselyn fabrics for my apron. I think they remind me of the aprons my Grandma used to wear as she loved flowers of any kind. Anyone else picking out fabrics yet?

Hmmm, I haven't even looked yet. I guess I better do that this week, and see what material I have that would make a good looking apron or two.

Well, I'm not sure if I can do this with y'all, but I do have an apron half made for myself - making up the pattern as I go - pretty easy! I'm using the fabric I got from Jess (I'm making a matching, sort of, tablecloth) Yes, I will send someone pics to post when I'm done. The fabric is the yellow one in the Extra Bolts section here http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/stores_app/Browse_dept_items.asp?S... Looks like she's all out, but I love it and am using red (of course!!) for my accent, oh and a pieced block in the bib area.

Jess, I think this is a wonderful idea for a fall Saturday Special.

I may not be able to join you all that morning as we already have plans for that weekend, but I will be sure to drop in the thread later to all the wonderful projects you have made and to check the pattern.

Connie ... that website you posted had some interesting links. I particularly liked this one:

http://www.craftygal.com/archives/402/table402.htm

It is a good basic pattern that would cover well for the "more to love" figures like mine and would also work well for the "fit and trim" women, too.  Also, it is adaptable for those who want to make a bibbed apron and for those who prefer just a skirt apron.

I have ordered some of the this fabric from Jess and used a fat quarter of it in the geese units of my "Late Summer Evening Mystery Quilt" and I think it would be perfect to wrap a loaf of bread in:

http://webstore.quiltropolis.net/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?Shopper_id=400710131514154007&Store_id=691&page_id=23&Item_ID=1215

I think I have enough left for an apron skirt and I may want to use one of the other lovely autumn fabrics for the top of the apron and the pocket.

Maybe we should ask our bread baking expert, Dorian, for her easiest bread recipe and she could give bread baking tips to us that day, too.

The idea of making and apron and giving a loaf of bread to someone on the day before Thanksgiving is so appealing to me.

Thanks, Jess, for another great idea.

  Pat

Hey Pat, I like that apron pattern!! It looks simple and easy, yet a nice one to wear in the kitchen. Teeheheee...that's some great material for an apron to give with a loaf of bread

Thanks for the link Connie!

Oh, I'll be happy to give some bread making tips and post an easy recipe.
